What in the Gulf?!?!?

KEROSENE CAN!!!!
...soothe sore joints!
...treat lice!
...flush parasites!
...rub kerosene and butter on a sore throat!

Well....maybe kerosene can't REALLY do all those things, but at one point in our history, these remedies were considered  a form of treatment for a variety of ailments!

And while ABK won't be selling you any kerosene/butter for your sore throat, we DO want you to notice the historical elements that make "our store"  our store.  And this Gulf Kerosene pump is a perfect example!

In the history of the Greenwich Store, customers could bring in jugs or cans for refilling at the pump inside the store.  The kerosene was then used to heat their homes, cook with, or provide a source of light (among other uses).

Read below about one man's memories of going to the General Store to get his family kerosene jug refilled....

While our Gulf Kerosene pump isn't active, it still remains in the original placement in the store where so many "Greenwich-ians" obtained kerosene to keep their homes - and lives - lit.   Check out our piece of "Petroliana" and American History!

If you've got a  BURNING interest for more petroliana, author Beverly Cline wrote a piece about the  History of Kerosene  in the August/September 2007 issue of "History Magazine" - interesting stuff!

Have any stories about filling up at The Greenwich Store, or memories of kerosene used in your home? Leave them in the comment box or shoot us an email! We'd love to hear from you...who knows? Maybe your memory will inspire future ABK postings!!
